DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled. We are rescheduling with our speaker and will let you know the new date and time.\n\nPlease note: This is a Zoom-only event! Our guest will be coming to us by video from across the country. Registration is required.\n  \nPanels and Pictures: Comic and Graphic Novel Writing by guest Dave Ebersole \nWhat is the story you’ve always wanted to read but never have? Comic books and graphic novels tell stories through pictures organized in sequential order. They can tell big\, world-bending stories of characters with immense powers. They can tell more intimate stories of personal issues and family drama. You can tell any kind of story through this medium\, but where do you start? During this workshop you’ll learn about the endless possibilities and genres comics contain\, the early steps in creating your book\, and tips on how to work and collaborate with artists. You’ll also learn ways to get your comic out there\, and you’ll begin to create a concept to make your very own book. \nNo experience necessary; this workshop seeks to help you find the comic you want to tell. \nDave Ebersole Bio: Dave Ebersole has been a theater director in the greater Philadelphia area for over fifteen years. Having served as associate artistic director for HATG Theater Company\, resident director for Theatre For Transformation\, and artistic director for Diversion Productions. His plays have been produced by Casabuena Cultural Productions\, The Independent Voices Festival\, GAYFest!\, The Ithaca Fringe Festival\, Stagecrafters Theater\, The Las Vegas Fringe Festival\, Spotlight Theatre\, and PCS. Dave made his debut as a comic book writer with DASH published by Northwest Press which has been adapted into an audio drama by the Light Booth Blackout Productions. Other companies he’s written comics for include A Wave New World\, Grey Haven Comics\, and One Shot Horror. He holds a BA in Theater Arts from Temple University and an MFA in Writing for the Stage and Screen from Point Park University. He lives outside Philadelphia with his Yorkie Ernie. \nPlease register for this event (scroll all the way down) so we can send you the Zoom link. Register no later than 3 pm on Wednesday\, October 12. We cannot guarantee you’ll get the link if you register after this time.

SUMMARY:September 2022 Writer's Night: Realistic Expectations for Your Screenplay
DESCRIPTION:Please register for this event by scrolling all the way down. Thank you. \n“Giant Radioactive Shark” \nor Realistic Expectations for Your Screenplay \n“We’ve all scrolled through the guide\, seeing titles like ‘Giant Radioactive Shark’ or ‘Outhouse of the Dead’ and think\, ‘who writes this stuff?’ or ‘how does this get a budget?’ I’ve worked in this domain for years\, the ‘destined for the dollar bin at Wal-Mart’ projects. Turns out it’s hard to say no when someone offers you money to write or direct a movie\, so you end up trying to make the best of an unwinnable situation. It’s not like a writer sits around and thinks ‘Another zombie movie will put me on the map!’ Nope\, writer’s gotta get paid\, though–and when you’re getting paid\, you gotta write what the person writing the checks wants. To that end I’ll talk about how to keep your sanity when Hollywood wants you to dumb it down\, and how to work within the confines of a formula but enjoy what you’re working on. Mostly\, I’ll talk about how to get your screenplay written and made\, even if you must film it yourself.” \nPresenter: Hank Braxtan \nHank grew up in Fruita and Grand Junction\, making home movies throughout school and eventually in the US Army.  After an honorable discharge and short stint in film school\, Hank moved to Los Angeles where he descended into the “struggle” for over a decade\, eventually writing and directing several movies and episodes of television shows.  After moving with his wife back to Grand Junction in 2018\, the couple has produced three feature films on the Western Slope\, bringing in talents such as Michael Jai White and Jeff Fahey\, while working with the local school curriculum to establish a film hub in Western Colorado.  Hank has been nominated for several Emmy awards (mostly lost) among other awards (that were also mostly lost). \nThis session WILL NOT be streamed live on Zoom. All live-streaming has been suspended for now.

SUMMARY:August 2022 Writer's Night - Textures: Considering Sound in Writing
DESCRIPTION:Scroll all the way down to register. \nTextures: Considering Sound in Writing \nPresented by Lisa Connors \nIn writing\, sound is more than just using sound words\, like whisper or clang. Sound is the actual letters themselves and the sounds they make. Consider what a garden sounds like – long and short I’s\, soft S’s and H’s\, perhaps? Using Hyacinth or Narcissus\, rather than flowers\, gives the feeling of a quiet morning in the garden. Choosing the right words based on sound can add subtle layers of meaning\, tone\, and texture to our writing. \nLisa Wence Connors Bio: Lisa has facilitated poetry workshops for the Salt Lake City Public Library System\, the Mesa County Public Library\, and the Veterans Administration. She is the editor of High Desert Cadence: A Journal of Veteran Poetry. Her work has appeared in Alexandria Quarterly\, Bluestem Literary Journal\, and Atlas & Alice\, among others. She received a Gold Medal for her poem Mote as Impressionist at the 2022 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition. \nJoin us live at The Art Center in Grand Junction\, CO from 6-7:30 pm on Tuesday\, August 2. We’re also streaming this presentation on Zoom from the live event. \nAll who register (bottom of this page) will also be sent the Zoom link prior to the event. Please register NO LATER than 3 pm on Tuesday\, August 2.
