October Writer’s Night – The Working Journal: Observation, Voice, Story, and Surprise with Melody Jones

October 6 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Free

A generative workshop for writers who want more material, more momentum, and fewer solemn conversations with a blank page.

Please note the RSVP field is now BELOW the workshop info!

Journaling is not just “Dear Diary” – unless your diary is full of suspicious characters, overheard conversations, bad decisions, fabulous sentences, and the occasional petty grievance. Or just petty grievances. Page after petty page. No judgment here.

In this fun, generative workshop, writers of every genre and experience level will use the journal as a creative playground, field notebook, idea vault, and escape hatch from the blank page. Through prompts and short writing experiments, we’ll gather details, test voices, follow odd questions, and dive into our own psyches (because we are ALL a whole mess of material). We will turn everyday scraps into possible poems, stories, essays, scenes, and other promising trouble.

Come ready to write. Leave with a bit of new material, useful prompts, and a journal practice that supports the writing you actually want to make, without requiring you to become a person who calls every entry a “journey.”

Join us on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 6-7:30 p.m. at The Art Center located at 7th and Orchard. Please note that all Writer’s Nights are on the first Tuesday of the month at The Art Center in Grand Junction, CO.

Speaker Bio

Melody Jones, writer's night facilitator and president of the Western Colorado Writers' ForumMelody Jones is a writer, poet, and journaling workshop facilitator who helps people get out of their own way and onto the page. Her writer workshops pair practical prompts (ah, alliteration!) with creative mischief and a healthy disrespect for the inner critic. She invites writers of all experience levels to explore the good stuff: memory, observation, voice, and the fantastically strange material already cluttering their minds. She believes a journal can be a field notebook, an idea vault, a complaint department, or a place to give a stubborn sentence one more chance. OR a Dear Diary Confessional, which we all need from time to time – you do you!

Melody was raised in Palisade, took a detour through the Front Range for many years, and now resides in Grand Junction. She limps around on a dysfunctional knee and probably drinks too much coffee.
