Textures: Considering Sound in Writing

Presented by Lisa Connors

In writing, sound is more than just using sound words, like whisper or clang. Sound is the actual letters themselves and the sounds they make. Consider what a garden sounds like – long and short I’s, soft S’s and H’s, perhaps? Using Hyacinth or Narcissus, rather than flowers, gives the feeling of a quiet morning in the garden. Choosing the right words based on sound can add subtle layers of meaning, tone, and texture to our writing.

Lisa Wence Connors Bio: Lisa has facilitated poetry workshops for the Salt Lake City Public Library System, the Mesa County Public Library, and the Veterans Administration. She is the editor of High Desert Cadence: A Journal of Veteran Poetry. Her work has appeared in Alexandria Quarterly, Bluestem Literary Journal, and Atlas & Alice, among others. She received a Gold Medal for her poem Mote as Impressionist at the 2022 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition.
